Thesis

Nothing in your house makes cold.

A cooling system does not make cold. It picks heat up inside and puts it down outside.

That is why the outdoor unit runs hot while the rooms run cool, and why a heat pump can run the same cycle backwards in winter.

Once you know it is moving heat, everything that goes wrong with it makes sense.

The machine

One machine, split by a wall

Knowing which side you are describing is half of the phone call.

  1. 01

    Return grille

    inside

The wide vent air leaves the room through. It is the only route air has back to the machine, so it has to stay clear.

  2. 02

    Filter

    inside

It sits at the return, and it protects the coil behind it at least as much as it cleans the air in front of it.

  3. 03

    Blower

    inside

The fan. It is the only part of the system that moves air at all, and everything after it is duct.

  4. 04

    Indoor coil

    inside

Where heat leaves the air. Water condenses on it while it runs, which is why there is a drain pan underneath it.

  5. 05

    Line set

    through the wall

Two insulated lines through an outside wall. They carry refrigerant between the halves, and they are the only connection.

  6. 06

    Outdoor unit

    outside

The other coil, and the compressor. Its whole job is to hand the heat it collected indoors to the air around it.

Services

The work on both halves

Describe both halves and the diagnosis has already started.

  • Gloved hands working at the open service panel of an outdoor condenser unit
    01

    AC repair

Work on a system that runs but is no longer moving heat out of the building.

  • Open furnace cabinet showing the burner assembly and heat exchanger
    02

    Furnace and heat pump repair

Two machines that do the same thing in a room and almost nothing in common behind the wall.

  • New outdoor condenser unit set on a fresh pad with its line set connected
    03

    System replacement

Both halves together, because the indoor and outdoor units are a matched pair.

  • Insulated flexible duct runs and a sheet metal plenum in an attic space
    04

    Ductwork

The path between the machine and the room, and the place work goes missing on the way.

  • Condenser coil fins being cleaned with a soft brush and water
    05

    Maintenance

Cleaning the coils, clearing the drain, and looking at the parts that wear before they stop.

  • Bank of clean pleated filters seated in a sheet metal filter rack
    06

    Filtration and ventilation

What the system does with the air besides changing what temperature it is.

Two surfaces

One coil takes the heat, the other gives it up.

Before you call anyone

What you can check without tools

None of it needs a ladder, and any of it could be the whole problem.

  1. 01

    The filter

Hold it up to a light. If light does not come through it, the blower is working against it instead of through it.

  2. 02

    The return grille

A rug or a piece of furniture across a return starves the whole system, because that is the only route air has back.

  3. 03

    Around the outdoor unit

It has to hand its heat to the air around it. Anything packed against the fins gives it back its own warm air.

  4. 04

    The registers you closed

Closing registers in unused rooms does not reduce the work. It raises the pressure in the duct behind them.

Demonstration only. This form does not send, and nothing typed into it reaches anyone.

Tell us what both halves are doing.

The room, the outdoor unit, and whether anything changed recently. That is where a quote starts.
