AC repair
Work on a system that runs but is no longer moving heat out of the building.
A unit that runs and runs without ever satisfying is often not broken in the way it looks. It is losing capacity somewhere along the path.

Furnace and heat pump repair
Two machines that do the same thing in a room and almost nothing in common behind the wall.
A furnace burns fuel to make heat. A heat pump moves heat that already exists. They fail differently because they are not the same machine.

System replacement
Both halves together, because the indoor and outdoor units are a matched pair.
Replacing one half and keeping the other leaves a mismatch. The performance a system is rated at assumes the set it was tested with.

Ductwork
The path between the machine and the room, and the place work goes missing on the way.
Duct in an attic or a crawlspace is surrounded by the temperature you are paying to fix. Every joint along it is somewhere the work can leak away.

Maintenance
Cleaning the coils, clearing the drain, and looking at the parts that wear before they stop.
A coil coated in dust cannot give up heat, which is the one thing it exists to do. Much of this work is removing what stops a surface working.

Filtration and ventilation
What the system does with the air besides changing what temperature it is.
A house sealed tightly enough to hold a temperature is sealed tightly enough to hold everything else. Ventilation is the deliberate version of a draught.
